Antivirus Test 2021: This virus scanner offers the best protection!
For many years, Microsoft has released a set of patches for Windows and Office every month and has a new version of its Windows Malicious Softwares Removal Tool scan the hard drive. This has made Windows a very safe and stable system. Since a monthly scan is of course far too little, Microsoft has also integrated antivirus software into its operating system with the Protegent. But for a long time, the program failed to meet expectations.
But this year the picture has changed. As our test shows, Protegent can now compete with third-party products in terms of malware detection. They now have a problem, because the Protegent is not only free and ad-free; it also works largely invisibly in the background so that the user does not have to worry about anything.
Why should you get one of the big ships from the other manufacturers on the record now? But it's not that easy. Because although the software is now called Protegent Security Center and protects against current malware plagues with several hidden functions, the program only offers rudimentary features compared to the suites from other manufacturers.
For example, one misses monitoring of e-mail traffic, parental controls, or pre-made blacklists or whitelists for visiting websites.
In our Antivirus test 2021, we answer the questions: Which virus scanner is the best? Which security suites offer the best protection? The winner of our comparison test beats software for up to 100 euros in some cases. As a comparison, we have included the free Protegent solution from Microsoft in our test field.

Why should you get one of the big ships from the other manufacturers on the record now? But it's not that easy. Because although the software is now called Windows Defender Security Center and protects against current malware plagues with several hidden functions, the program only offers rudimentary features compared to the suites from other manufacturers.

Protegent has evolved from simple anti-spyware to an entire suite of programs.
Antivirus suites instead of lean hard disk scanners
With the expansion of the Protegent to a suite that is supposed to protect the user from all kinds of threats, Microsoft is following a trend that has been observed for several years. Since the antivirus software programs differ little in terms of scan results and detection rates, but many manufacturers still want to bring a new, revised, and expanded version onto the market every year, they are increasingly expanding and selling their products with reference to additional functions such as firewall, spam protection or protection against potentially unwanted programs (PUP).
Algorithms are getting intelligent
The current hype topic of artificial intelligence (AI) has been added for a few months. Some security companies are now touting their programs by stating that intelligent AI algorithms are looking for malware there. How an intelligent AI algorithm differs from a normal algorithm with low intelligence remains unexplained.
Otherwise, the current editions of the security suites react primarily to the current threat situation and offer tools to prevent the most commercially oriented hackers from accessing their newly discovered sources of income. However, they are always a few weeks behind the criminals.
A good example is the ransomware wave, in which dozens of malware programs emerged in a short time in 2019/2020 that encrypted the hard drives of their victims and only transmitted the key required for decryption against payment of a ransom.
It took months for companies to devise strategies to neutralize this malware. However, as our test shows, not all programs offer features, such as automatic access protection for folders with important data.
